It would be great if you can find yourself in the good books of those at or above your boss’s level so that you can be assured of positive reference in the future. 3. Find ways to influence and manage their behavior Find out the likes and dislikes of your boss. If you think he likes a particular person it’ll be a good idea to slip into his positive reference whenever you have an opportunity. If you see that he/ she believes in family values you can share about the strong family values that you were raised with. Your boss should see you as an ally and not an opponent. This is the purpose of this point. He should be able to identify your ideas as common with his. 4. Don’t cower, but don’t get into a power struggle Stand for yourself. If you feel attacked by the way your boss behaves in public or private, you must voice it out. Possible, this will remind your boss of you being a sensitive human being as well. Do not get into a power struggle against him because in a case like that, you are bound to loose. So stand for yourself and voice your feelings. 5. Give Your Best and Manage Your Emotions It’s truly hard to manage your work and emotions at the same time especially when your work is undervalued or wrongly criticized. Use your experience with your current employer as a stride for developing coping mechanism so that you are prepared for your next job. It’s essential for you to give your best even in the midst of an emotional storm by persevering until you finally decide to switch to another job.

We are big fans of behavioral descriptive interviewing process, which is where we ask you examples of your background. For example, if we want you to work as part of a team we will ask you about a time where you have worked as part of a team and the conflicts that came from it and how you worked through that and what your role was in that team. So it's your chance to give examples of how you worked as a team and what your role was. A very common question we ask is that we are very customer focused so we always ask for examples of when you had to deal with a difficult customer and we want a true story of how you worked with them and how they went away happy. We ask that question all the time. Do you want to hear another example of what employers ask in the interview? One question I ask is: "what brought you here? What brought you to this point?" It's a very open ended question and the reason I ask it is to encourage the individual to identify for me what their priority information is. I don't want to know about "what it was like I was born, or I remember my first..." but there is a little bit of the journey that I want to know about. And then I want to specifically know how they drill into the relevancy of their background and this job. Lisa Mohr How do you deal with your work jerk? I was recently at an event and I had a participant in the audience shout out about a situation at work. She has a colleague that comes into their work environment. There's a group of five of them working on a project and she comes in and says, "You're not doing this right and according to the rules, you need to be doing this, this, this and this," and just is diminishing and condescending to the entire group. Apparently no one likes her, but this audience participant is specifically irritated by this individual on a visceral level. It just really, really upset her. This is a fantastic topic to talk about because a lot of people have issues with people at work. The thing is is that this woman is looking at maybe getting written up or maybe getting fired. I pointed out to the audience participant; I'll just call her Jane, for all practical purposes. I said, "Jane, we can cut off this person's head, but ten more heads are going to grow." I said, "The reality is is that you have issues with this kind of personality type in your life. Correct?" She nodded, "Yes." Whether or not we realize that this is huge, we attract dynamics. Okay? You're going to have that same infuriating dynamic that you have at work with your neighbors, with your family, with your friends, with your in-laws and of course other co-workers and just people in life. You may even run into it at the bank or the grocery store. Why is that? Well, I have this in my book, More Infinite Wisdom. We have these huge, big, red shiny angry buttons. Huge, and we walk around with them. We're sticking them out on our chest and whether or not we realize, people go ehh and they hit that. We go postal. We go crazy and then we blame them. We want to make them the bad guy. Okay. Said this before, I'll say it again. The goal in life is to be the detached witness. You are the eye of the hurricane. You can exhaust yourself trying to organize the storm around you and organizing your external universe or you can organize your internal universe and be detached, and watch and say, "Isn't it interesting that that individual came in and tried to diminish me? Boy, is she insecure. There must be seriously something wrong with her. I wonder if she feels isolated because we're a group and she's not and her way of feeling in control is to manage us. Isn't it interesting that my heart rate is pounding right now? Isn't it interesting that I'm feeling upset? I wonder why I'm really angry." This is gold. "Isn't it interesting that she reminds me of my mother?" Ahh. There's the big one. You got it. That's it. You're triggered because of your big, red, shiny button. Somebody came in in your life and tried to manage you. Now, you are important. I know. You're like, "Lisa, you don't know me," but really you are important. How do I know that? Because I'm important and do you think for a second I would let anybody talk to me like that? If somebody came in that was condescending to me like that, I'd say, "Wow. That was incredibly diminishing." They'd step back. "Did you mean it to sound like that, because it really sounded like you think I don't know what I'm doing. Was that your intention?" I would not allow that dynamic. That is the difference between me and Jane. I'm too important to have anybody diminish me. You are too important. You are too important to have anyone diminish you. Don't allow it. Don't condition people to diminish you. Do not participate in that dynamic. Most importantly, recondition them correctly with respect, to treat you as though you were important and when you do this, you must treat them as though they are important. Now, the trick becomes not to engage, not to say, "What did you say?" and get attitude, because as soon as you engage, it's over. Unacceptable Behavior As a leader, you are expected to know how to handle unacceptable behavior and performance in your work team. Many leaders are reluctant to address behavior and performance problems on their team, hoping that it's going to get better on its own. It usually doesn't. One reason leaders are reluctant is that they worry a lot about how the team member is going to react to the negative feedback. Most team members will mope and give the leader the cold shoulder for a couple of days and that can really worry a team leader who wants everyone to like them. I remember talking to one of the department managers while on site with one of my clients and he said he used to worry a lot about how someone would react to the news that he gave them. It was unpredictable whether the employee would be overly angry and argumentative or whether they would cry or break down emotionally. He decided that no matter what the reaction was, his ultimate goal was to see a change in behavior. Keeping the focus on changing the unacceptable behavior is a great goal. Here are three tips to help you. Tip #1 - See something, do something Recognize that it's your job as the leader to say something when you see something. Letting things go or looking the other way sends a negative signal that you aren't prepared or able to deal with difficult situations. One company hired our company to facilitate some focus groups because their employee survey showed a lot of negative reactions inside the company. When the employees were asked why there was so much negativity, they said it was because management wouldn't deal with the performance and attitude problems of their co-workers. You should know that it really bugs your high performers when you don't deal with your low performers, affecting performance and productivity across the organization. Tip #2 - Take a conversational approach There is no need to get overly aggressive or authoritarian. The goal is to change the behavior, not attack the person and make them feel bad. Have a calm conversation about the behavior you observed. Tip #3 - Be clear about the behavior that you're seeing You know the level of standards and expectation that you have. Help the team member make plans to achieve the desired change. It is important to ask for their commitment to the new plan. Hopefully, you will never get to the point where you enjoy giving corrective feedback. You can become more comfortable and confident with a little practice and experience. Being able to handle the negative feedback and negative behaviors and attitudes of your work team can help you be more confident as a front line leader.
