Bosses tend to give orders; they need their employees to listen and to obey. However, leaders always listen to the opinions of their colleagues and regard them as important. Leaders are always ready for advising, discussion and any feedback an employee has to offer. This reciprocity makes any individual employee feel stronger and gives him or her confidence to follow the leader. 3. Leaders motivate rather than terrify. While working on projects, people have their ups and downs. Through this roller coaster, bosses are more likely to intimidate into action while leaders will motivate to action. One of the best things about leaders is that they offer empathy and prepare a group for the tasks at hand. This is very important, seeing as whenever colleagues are not prepared for certain duties, leaders are there to support, teach and back them up. Leaders know that each employee is on the team for a reason and they have faith in every concerted effort. 4. Leaders teach and learn rather than expect and ignore. A true leader is the person who has self-esteem, but who is not arrogant nor embarrassed to learn from those with lower titles. They know that it is never late to learn more. This explains the tendency of leaders to always pay attention to their colleagues, knowing there is always more to learn from them. Moreover, leaders are not only takers, but givers, as well. A good leader is not greedy for sharing knowledge and experience with someone else; instead, the leader teaches and nurtures new professionals. 5. Leaders take part rather than stay aside. While bosses choose to stay aside in the job, leaders take initiative. They watch over the progress of work, make adjustments where necessary and aid team members. They choose to be a part of the team rather than bossing the team around. 6. Leaders reprimand rather than scold or shout. When necessary, a leader offers constructive criticism. However, a leader never scolds or shouts at any individual, especially in public. They do understand that they are dealing with people and no one has right to humiliate others. Rather, the leader talks to the person individually and without any spike in temper. 7. Leaders establish equal relationships. Anyone who has ever worked on a team knows what it feels like when the manager chooses his favorites and non-favorites. It always causes stress and tension among team members which compromises productivity. A good leader tries to treat everyone equally and to not allow personal preferences affect the team dynamic. During your life, you will face two kinds of managers: leaders and bosses. It does not matter how high the position of these individuals; bossy people are more likely to fail while those who lead will succeed. Apparently no one likes her, but this audience participant is specifically irritated by this individual on a visceral level. It just really, really upset her. This is a fantastic topic to talk about because a lot of people have issues with people at work. The thing is is that this woman is looking at maybe getting written up or maybe getting fired. I pointed out to the audience participant; I'll just call her Jane, for all practical purposes. I said, "Jane, we can cut off this person's head, but ten more heads are going to grow." I said, "The reality is is that you have issues with this kind of personality type in your life. Correct?" She nodded, "Yes." Whether or not we realize that this is huge, we attract dynamics. Okay? You're going to have that same infuriating dynamic that you have at work with your neighbors, with your family, with your friends, with your in-laws and of course other co-workers and just people in life. You may even run into it at the bank or the grocery store. Why is that? Well, I have this in my book, More Infinite Wisdom. We have these huge, big, red shiny angry buttons. Huge, and we walk around with them. We're sticking them out on our chest and whether or not we realize, people go ehh and they hit that. We go postal. We go crazy and then we blame them. We want to make them the bad guy. Okay. Said this before, I'll say it again. The goal in life is to be the detached witness. You are the eye of the hurricane. You can exhaust yourself trying to organize the storm around you and organizing your external universe or you can organize your internal universe and be detached, and watch and say, "Isn't it interesting that that individual came in and tried to diminish me? Boy, is she insecure. There must be seriously something wrong with her. I wonder if she feels isolated because we're a group and she's not and her way of feeling in control is to manage us. Isn't it interesting that my heart rate is pounding right now? Isn't it interesting that I'm feeling upset? I wonder why I'm really angry." This is gold. "Isn't it interesting that she reminds me of my mother?" Ahh. There's the big one. You got it. That's it. You're triggered because of your big, red, shiny button. Somebody came in in your life and tried to manage you. Now, you are important. I know. You're like, "Lisa, you don't know me," but really you are important. How do I know that? Because I'm important and do you think for a second I would let anybody talk to me like that? If somebody came in that was condescending to me like that, I'd say, "Wow. That was incredibly diminishing." They'd step back. "Did you mean it to sound like that, because it really sounded like you think I don't know what I'm doing. Was that your intention?" I would not allow that dynamic. That is the difference between me and Jane. I'm too important to have anybody diminish me. You are too important. You are too important to have anyone diminish you. Don't allow it. Don't condition people to diminish you. Do not participate in that dynamic. Most importantly, recondition them correctly with respect, to treat you as though you were important and when you do this, you must treat them as though they are important. Now, the trick becomes not to engage, not to say, "What did you say?" and get attitude, because as soon as you engage, it's over. Insubordination is the act of willfully disobeying an order given by a manager or supervisor - It comes in many forms: - Outright refusal to carry out a reasonable direct order - Challenging or criticizing an order - Ignoring instructions or not following instructions fully - Showing open disrespect towards a supervisor - Using abusive language - Attitude problem -- rolling of the eyes, sighs, body language - Making malicious statements or threats, or even physical violence Insubordinate behavior may start out small, but if left uncorrected, can snow ball.. So it must be addressed in the early stages. Insubordination will serve to: - Undermine the authority of the manager - Can cause issue among all employees if left unchecked - Cause productivity problems - Drop in moral of the team. - Eventually good employees may end up leaving. Most instances of insubordination can be nipped in the bud with a brief word or corrective coaching. However, if there is a repeat of the behavior, then you must enforce formal disciplinary procedure. Before deciding on appropriate actions to take, consider the following factors: - If the behavior is a performance problem, then ensure the employee has been trained on the skills and information required to complete their job - If the behavior is a problem of misconduct, step back to assess the situation to see if you can identify the root problem -- Many times a behavioral problem occurs as a result of another situation or conflict that may be occurring, and solving the root problem may automatically fix the behavioral issues - Was your order direct, clear and unambiguous? (hint -- Don't ask- TELL!) - Was the order reasonable? - Was the order understood? (ask for written as well as verbal feedback) - Was a published policy or work rule violated? - Did the employee understand your expectations? (give clear job description so there is no confusion about job role) - Did the employee know he was being insubordinate? - Was the employee aware of consequences? - Employees record - Consequences of the act (impact on operation including effect on workplace productivity /profits/other employees) - Mitigating factors - Attitude of the employee - Past practice - Prior incidents - Is the employee having personal problems or workload is too much? (may be a temporary situation and with some understanding and coaching and adjustment of workload, this can be corrected). - Where there any extenuating circumstances? You see where this is going.. Need to step back and assess the situation and to determine the appropriate discipline on a case by case basis. You need a zero tolerance policy, but you cannot penalize employees for even the slightest infarction. So how to handle insubordination? - Schedule a meeting with the employee behind closed doors - Stay Calm and Don't react emotionally -- your knee jerk reaction may be to lose your temper, and become personal, especially if the employee becomes abusive .. resist this ..maintain a professional demeanor and tone at all times when talking to the employee. - Focus on facts and be specific -- don't use generic words like 'attitude'.. (may put them on the defensive) simply speak about behaviors and actions observed and that you can document - Listen to the reasons the employee gives for insubordination - If you are satisfied that insubordination has taken place - Explain what they did wrong and how this impacts the job - Set out the conduct that is expected in the future.. - Give them a copy of the company policy - Make it clear the consequences of violating terms in the future- disciplinary action you have at your disposal .. - Document everything including the date the incident happened, other people present, nature of insubordination, what was said (use exact words) and the non-verbal reactions.. - Ask the employee to sign the document.
